This is me, Sarah Hiscox. I am a third year student in the Elementary BEd program at UVic, here in (mostly) sunny Victoria, BC. When I am not studying, I can usually be found hanging at the beach, taking my dog Louie for walks, or riding bikes with my kids around our beautiful city.

I have chosen to take this course (EDCI 337), as well as three other compatible courses, to complete a tech certification that will enhance my future career as an educator. My first experience with multimedia design was during my second year of the education program—when due to the global pandemic, my entire school year was delivered either synchronously or asynchronously. I am not the most tech savvy person, but I learned many  new skills that year and overcame many of my prior anxieties with educational technology.

In our modern world, we have become increasingly aware of the need to support learners in flexible and alternative ways to ensure everyone is supported in their educational goals. Throughout this program, I have learned the importance of open learning and providing opportunities for students to have choice and agency over their own learning.  Developing our own personal learning networks while curating and managing our own knowledge is the future of education and of professional development. I look forward to learning more avenues of multimedia design and open learning to aid in my future career, and how to implement modern learning design to increase connection and community amongst my future students.

Here’s to successful term and positive learning experiences for all. Cheers!
